PRODUCTION OF RAW CHEMICALS

Covestro Germany

Focussed expertise

The use of polyurethane foam has become a household name where hot and cold insulation are concerned. It is difficult to imagine achieving this without using of polyurethane foam. Covestro is among the world’s largest manufacturers of the components used to produce these insulation sheets and operates one of its world scale plants in Brunsbüttel, a location selected strategically as it is where the Elbe and the Kiel Canal meet. The establishment of additional globally active companies that operate their own production facilities has allowed a highly modern industrial site, which simultaneously serves as a magnet for a multitude of service providers, to emerge. These sites specialise in catering for companies associated with the chemical industry. In its capacity as an infrastructure facilities operator, Covestro serves as a point of contact for all topics concerning the Covestro Brunsbüttel industrial park and is committed to bringing additional, chemical-related manufacturers and service providers affiliated to Schleswig-Holstein’s largest industrial site on board. It’s clear that each new partner will increase productivity on the industrial site by creating new product networks, combined infrastructure use and development.

LANXESS Germany GmbH

Premium products from the chemical industry

LANXESS develops, produces and markets chemical intermediates, additives, specialty chemicals and plastics worldwide. In Brunsbüttel - the largest industrial area in Schleswig-Holstein and part of the Hamburg metropolitan region - we have two production sites: Antioxidants for rubbers and precursors for herbicides are produced here. Our anti-aging agents for rubbers are used for tyres and technical rubber articles such as assembly lines, drive belts and rollers. They help to protect against external influences and thus extend the service life of the products. Our precursor for herbicides is also an important component of the colorant Macrolex® Blue 3R: this gives PET water bottles their familiar bluish hue.

LANXESS does not only develop innovative products in Brunsbüttel, but has also set itself ambitious climate protection goals. We want to become climate-neutral worldwide by 2040. To this end, we in Brunsbüttel are already using rail, pipeline and ship via the nearby port of Hamburg to reduce the CO2 emissions resulting from transport. Acting responsibly towards nature and future generations is important to us. That's why we not only train chemical laboratory technicians and industrial mechanics, but are also committed to promoting MINT subjects (mathematics, information science, natural sciences and technology) at schools and daycare centres in the region.

PRODUCTION OF RAW CHEMICALS

Sasol Germany GmbH

Wide range of organic and non-organic products

Sasol Germany GmbH is a manufacturer of high-quality chemical products with production facilities in Brunsbüttel and Marl and headquarters in Hamburg. Around 1,800 employees and almost 100 trainees produce innovative, sustainable products and develop solutions for the processing industry. The company offers a wide range of products, including substances to produce detergents and cleaning agents, paints and varnishes, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. In addition, specialities such as high-purity and ultra-high-purity aluminas are used, for example, as catalyst carriers in catalytic converters for the automotive industry, industrial applications and high-performance abrasives.

At the plant in Brunsbüttel, the approximately 800 employees and about 60 trainees primarily produce fatty alcohols and inorganic speciality chemicals.

Sasol Germany GmbH is part of the South African Sasol Group, an integrated leading chemical and energy company, where almost 29,000 employees in 22 countries manufacture and market first-class products.

Two product lines form the focal points of the site: organic and inorganic products. The organic products that Sasol produces in Brunsbüttel mainly include fatty alcohols and derivatives (downstream products based on the raw material). Fatty alcohols are produced at the Brunsbüttel plant from petrochemical (ethylene – petroleum-based) and renewable raw materials (fatty acids from coconut, palm or rapeseed oil, among others). Fatty alcohols are important basic materials to produce cosmetics, detergents and cleaning agents as well as plastic additives.

The second important product line in Brunsbüttel is determined by inorganic products, the high-purity and ultra-high-purity aluminas (chemical: aluminium oxide). Alumina, a white, odourless powder, is mainly used in the automotive and chemical industries.

The applications of high-purity aluminas are manifold. Among other things, they are needed to produce refinery and chemical catalysts, help in the desulphurisation of mineral oil products and are also a sought-after raw material in the production of high-performance abrasives and lightweight but extremely resilient plastics used in the aircraft industry.

Ultra-high purity aluminas are used in the manufacture of a wide variety of everyday products and applications. They are used in the production of monocrystalline sapphires used in the manufacture of LED lamps, scratch-resistant glasses for watches, cash register scanners and consumer electronics.

Sasol relies on the consistent further development of its own technologies and is continuously expanding the Brunsbüttel site.
